Scott Rice Done in 2013

Hernia surgery is the reason Rice will not appear in his 74th game this season.  Terry Collins said that Rice has been dealing with the issues for about three weeks.  I hope Rice is considered for the bullpen next season, i think he was a nice piece and while he should not be leaned on as the main lefty he is a nice consistent pitcher out of the pen.

Johan Santana Has Probable ReTear of Anterior Capsule

At around 6:45pm today, Sandy Alderson held a conference call with news in regards to Johan Santana.  He dropped the bomb almost immediately saying that Santana has a probable tear in his anterior capsule.

Add to this the fact that Alderson said that Santana having another surgery on his shoulder is a ‘strong possibility’ and that he could be lost ‘for the season.’

Johan Santana is entering into the final year of the six year, $137.5 million contract he signed in 2008 after being traded from Minnesota.  He is owed $25.5 million this year, with a team option next year for $25M or a $5.5M buy out.

This is odd to wrap my hear around.  I can remember the moment I learned the Mets traded for Johan six years ago.  I thought for sure after acquiring my favorite pitcher that we could make it back to the playoffs after the 2007 collapse.  Even though he was not always healthy – probably was unhealthy more often than not – he always gave the Mets and the fans everything he could on the mound.  And you could tell he truly cared about his performance.  The way he looked at the game like a chess match was great to watch.  He was truly a strategist out on the field.

There is a pretty good chance he will never don the Mets uniform again, which again is hard to think about.  Weirder to think about is that he may never wear another uniform at all.  This would be a horrible thing for all fans.  When he was on his game there was truly no one better – he could make anyone look silly without overpowering stuff.  He was definitely my favorite pitcher to watch live, there was just something about him and his ora.  He was a fighter and no matter the outcome you always appreciated him – he was definitely my favorite pitcher of this era even before he was a Met.  I just wish I could just watch him pitch well one more time.

Byrdak Rehab Ahead of Schedule

Tim Byrdak told reporters yesterday that his rehab is ahead of schedule and he could be back  by July 1.  Last September, Byrdak had surgery on his left shoulder to repair a tear in his anterior capsule, he also had surgery on a torn knee ligament.  Byrdak has been one of my favorite players since we brought him in a couple years ago.  He’s got fire and can be a goof ball at the same time.  He is a great chemistry guy  and i hope he can make it back

Quick Yankees News…. sorry

The Yankees as the Mets did today avoided arbitration with one of their relief pitchers with Joba Chamerlain agreeing to a $1.875M/1yr contract.  Joba this year will most likely be the Yankees’ seventh inning man after losing Soriano in free agency to Washington.  Alex Rodriguez had successful surgery this week and was found to have very minimal cartilage damage in his hip.  The projected recovery time for A-Rod’s hip injury is six months, aiming a return to the majors after the All-Star break.
