Harvey Dominate in 8-4 Win, Offense Alive Again

Game 2 was essentially the same story as Game 1. Good pitching, big offense and laugher by the end. But this was a freezing cold night game, reference Keith Hernandez’s camo gloves and fur coat he was wearing for much of the game. But no wind or cold was going to stand in the way of Matt Harvey making a statement in his first start of his first full major league season. From the first inning, in which he struck two of three batters out you could tell he had it – he went on to strike out 10 in 7 innings. Everth Cabrera singled in the fourth inning, proving to be San Diego’s only offense against Harvey all night. But Matt promptly picked him off first base after throwing over a couple of times. Later that innings he walked Will Venable who was erased on an inning ending double play. Harvey breezed through the rest of the game, with the only minor hiccup being a walk of Carlos Quentin in the seventh inning. Harvey threw 94 pitches in 7 innings, but it seemed like much less; being a perfectionist Harvey was not fully satisfied after the game but was still happy with the win as a whole. This was very important for every fascist of the Mest organization that Harvey looked this good. The plan is finally almost complete and once Wheeler and Harvey are up together (go to MetsHotCorner.com to see my article on Wheeler) we should be in for a show. As a crazy fan, one of the most important things and signs that came from last night was when Gary Cohen referred to Harvey as ‘Matt’ going into a commercial break. In the past the only few players who have consistently referred to as their first names were Pedro, Carlos, Carlos, Jose, David, Johan essentially the major stars. Ike i have also noticed is joining this group along with Murph at times. Keith calls Murphy ‘Daniel’ all the time. But this is just a stupid observation by an excited fan. Harvey was not the only good thing that came from last night’s game – the offense also kept up their good play early on.

It all started in the 2nd inning, when Lucas Duda launched a missile into the Pepsi Porch. I honestly was looking away and before I could find the ball when I looked, it was gone. Two innings later in the 4th, after a Duda double (good night for him) John Buck sent a deep fly ball of the fence in straight away right field – into the net of the Mo’ s Zone. Thats were we stood after four, 4-0 Mets. But the biggest blow, and longest, was still to come. In the fifth, Murphy reached base on a fielders choice. David then ripped a double on the ground down the line – once it got out of the infield i knew it was a run after seeing Carlos Quentin play balls in for a game and a half. David then advanced to third on the bad throw. With Ike coming up, all i wanted was for him to be productive with a sac fly or his first hit of the year to be a solid single to extend the lead further. He did much more than that. He flat out destroyed this ball, sending it beyond the bullpens and near the Shea Bridge, as Gary Cohen dubbed it. “a monumental blast.” I think it reached it honestly. Davis had a good short swing on it, and flipped the bat as he started his trot. David tagged up just for good measure but it was clearly gone the second it hit the bat.

While the bullpen was clearly not great, with Harvey giving up no runs in 7 and ending up winning the game 8-4, but i will save the criticism for when the game is much closer.

Today the Mets go for the sweep of the Opening Series at home for the second year in a row, with Dillon Gee on the mound this afternoon for a get away game. This will be another important start for the Mets to see if Gee has gotten all of his stuff back after suffering from a blood clot last season that ended his year. After a couple good spring starts I think Gee is fine and I am excited to see him develop this year as well. LGM 2-0.

Dillon Gee Pitches Great

Today against Atlanta Dillon Gee pitched wonderfully for six innings.  Striking out seven Braves while only delivering 65 pitches.  A great outing all around.  This after allowing 11 runs in his last two Grapefruit League starts.  Obviously a much needed confidence booster right before the start of the season.

The bullpen mates did not fare as well – Carson allowed two homeruns in 1/3 of an inning while Greg Burke allowed three hits, a walk and two earned runs during the 9th.  But the Mets still came out on top 7-4 in Disney.

Collin Cowgill had a productive day, going 2-2 with a walk two RBIs and two runs – including a homerun off Mike Minor.  (Andrew Brown and Jamie Hoffman also homered off Minor)

Brandon Lyon, Mets come to Agreement.

According to Jon Heyman, the Mets and Brandon Lyon have come to an agreement, pending a physical.  Earlier in the week, Sandy Alderson told the media he would be done acquiring bullpen arms if an agreement with Lyon could be reached.  Now that this has happened, i do not expect Alderson to renig on the statement that he wont be spending more money.  This is a great signing i think, and assuming Lyon is still healthy and doesnt re injure his elbow he will go a long way to solidifying the bullpen.  On another note, Frank Francisco has said yesterday that he is the Mets closer and Terry Collins agreed saying that we all saw how good he was when he was healthy.  What did the two of them see last year…? Sure he has the ability to pitch, and every now and then had shut down innings, but who hasnt when pitching at this level.  He is way too inconsistant to be a closer, and its not even the fact that he is inconsistant, its that he never has a slightly off game, when he is not on top of his game he implodes to the point where youre just wondering how he is going to blow the game.  not IF.  I can definitely see Lyon closing this year, or if they go away from Francisco they may rather use Parnell who pitched well in the roll in September.  Either way, if it is not Francisco in the ninth inning, i am happy.

Mets Sign Corey Patterson and Mike Wilson to minor league deals

Some people have been questioning why Sandy Alderson and the Mets have not taken the same approach with the outfield as they have with the bullpen.  Sandy has signed multiple veteran arms to minor league deals with major league camp invites.  But no one has really been signed as safety valves for the pathetic outfield.  Today Corey Patterson and Mike Wilson were signed to minor league contracts.  Patterson has been going down hill for a while now, and Wilson has only very limited major league experience.  these are really insignificant signings.  BOURN???

Two Relievers from Last Year’s ‘Pen are Officially Gone…

Jon Heyman (and Andrew Barragrly) have reported that San Francisco has brought back Ramon Ramirez on a minor league deal, one year after trading him to the Mets for Angel Pagan (who they just resigned to a 4 year/$40M contract).  The Giants also brought back Andres Torres, the other player in the Pagan deal, so that trade is officially a bust.  But it really was necessary because Pagan was feeling too much pressure here in New York and was showing that he was never going to be able to accomplish what he did last year in SF here in NY.

While Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Report has reported that Miami has signed Jon Rauch to a one year deal.  Sandy Alderson talked to the media a few days ago and said that if the Brandon Lyon deal went through he would be done with adding bullpen arms… Personally i felt that if we resigned Rauch along with Lyon we would have one of the better bullpens in the league, minus the whole closer situation of course…. But assuming Lyon is on board, the ‘pen is still much improved again assuming the older veterans havent lost everything.  All of these moves were much needed because we were definitely relying too much on untested young arms.  5 days till Spring Training.  LGM.  BOURN?

Brandon Lyon seems to be coming on board.

According to multiple reports, Jon Heyman and Andy Martino to name two, the Mets are confident in their ability to bring in Brandon Lyon to the bullpen, which has been slightly improved over the last week with the additions of LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Atchison, and Pedro Feliciano not to mention Aaron Laffey(although they are all officially minor league contracts i believe in not on Opening Day all three will be in the majors in 2013).  Brandon Lyon a few years ago was an above average closer(ARI ’08, HOU ’10-’11).  Last year, the 33 year old posted an ERA of 3.1o, in 67 appearances for Houston and Toronto.

It has also been stressed that this deal is not done, and Lyon is talking with other teams.  In 2011 he had surgery on his right biceps tendon and shoulder put his career in question.  I always saw Lyon as one of the underrated relief pitchers in the game.  I think he easily could take the closer’s job from Frank Francisco if he can remain healthy as he did last year (in his 11 year career, Lyon has 79 recorded saves).  You already know where i stand with Francisco though, id rather go down with Dan Warthen throwing knuckleballs in the ninth than watch him pout around the mound…

I like this move, although it is not done yet.  The bullpen is beginning to look respectable with Hawkins, Atchison, Parnell, Francisco, (Lyons), and maybe Edgin and Hefner? or Laffey? it all depends on who does what during the Spring.  But i feel much better than i did even one week ago.  Could we be able to retain Jon Rauch from the free market that would make for one very strong unit.  Signing Lyon would definintely be a more stable move than jumping on Valverde, who is known to cause double the stress Francisco does, and Brian Wilson who is recovering from Tommy John… LGM. LaTroy Hawkins Comes in to add Depth

Early this morning Bob Nightengale of USA Today announced that the Mets and LaTroy Hawkins have agreed to a minor league deal with an invite to major league camp.  Hawkins had an ok, numbers wise average 2012 at the age of 40.  His ERA was 3.64 in 42 innings; for his age this is actually decent and he has been a consistent veteran for many years now.  He has also been on the decline for a while, but what else are you going to get at this stage of the game? I am not going to criticize bringing in anyone who can help with the bullpen depth escpecially someone who has had the decent journeyman’s career that Hawkins has had.  If he still has the ability to pitch I think he, along with Atchison, should make the club just because before signing these two our bullpen was way too young to consistently be the people we lean on in high pressure situations.  None of them will develop in the majors if we throw them into stressful spots before they are mentally ready to deal with it, then we will never develop a solid pen.  Still no word on Bourn, right now i would not put money on him coming cause the issue with the pick seems to be a precedent MLB wants to make.  Although they may make a rule change next year that if you are bumped out of the top10 your pick is still protected.  Jon Heyman tweeted that even with this signing the Mets are still looking to add more bullpen help.

Mets Sign Scott Atchison to a Minor League Deal

the RHP Atchison pitched 51 1/3 innings for Boston last season, with and ERA of 1.58.  Regularly he probably would have made decent money after a season like this, but he is 36 years old and he also missed two months with a torn elbow ligament, which he had surgery to repair.  Atchison has a 3.48 career ERA in 155 major league games over six seasons.  If he makes the team out of Spring Training the deal is worth $750K, with incentives (according to Rob Bradford a RedSox beat writer for WEEI).

I think if he is healthy enough to be consistent he could be a real solid addition to the bullpen.  The Mets have no real veteran presence in the bullpen and with Atchison’s good career numbers he could be great.  He also can pitch to lefties as last year he kept them to a .188 BAA.  As a fan i hope he and Pedro Feliciano make the team out of Spring Training so we can have some veterans in the pen along with the young arms of Parnell, Edgin, Carson, Familia etc… along with the pathetic mess that is Frank Francisco.

Sandy Alderson on WFAN with Francesa yesterday….

Sandy was on WFAN yesterday for about 40 minutes discussing the status of his team with Mike Francesa.  He insinuated many things without really name dropping or tipping the Mets hand in any way shape or form.  He was adamant about the lack of ability in his outfield at the moment and that he is currently looking for upgrades anywhere possible.  But he also hinted that it was possible that the outfield could remain status quo, anything is possible.  Scott Hairston is the obvious easy upgrade the Mets can make in the outfield, albeit not a significant upgrade.  The issue here is that Hairston may be more concerned with the amount of playing time he will be guaranteed than his salary.  But Sandy Alderson has has stated, and did again yesterday, that the Mets are still entertaining the possibilities of making a bigger splash than Hairston in the outfield.  While this may be slightly exciting to the fans who’s last two ‘big’ free agent signings have been Jason Bay and Francisco Rodriguez, this tactic may also screw the team out of improving at all.  By attempting to swoop in a snag a star outfielder, we may wait too long to promise X amount of at-bats to Hairston and he may decide to go elsewhere like Chicago (Cubs).  I hope this doesn’t happen because i do not foresee the Mets making a splash with the likes of Justin Upton, Michael Bourn of even Jason Kubel.  But Scott Hairston at least makes the outfield not so bad that i want to vomit.  At least Hairston has the ability to have a decent slugging percentage.

Alderson also commented on the status of the bullpen.  Something he said was that he was excited about the amount of young and lefty depth that are at the Mets disposal.  This made me chuckle when he said that.  Of course you want lefty depth, but we honestly do not have much; Josh Edgin is a young kid who pitched well last year but as of now he is technically our number one lefty out of the ‘pen.  This should not be the case.  One reason is because Tim Byrdak injured his shoulder last year and he resigned with the Mets to a minor league contract.  The Mets have been leaning on Byrdak’s left arm for two seasons and I thought he would be injured eventually ala Pedro Feliciano after he signed his big contract with the Yankees.  I hope he can return this year, because i do not feel comfortable with Josh Edgin (who i do like) and Jon Carson, who i believe Sandy and Terry has way too much confidence in for nothing that he showed last year.  He also said that Frank Francisco is the current closer of the team but he is always looking to upgrade, hence going to Brian Wilson’s private workout this week where he threw about 20 pitches.  Sandy said he had a lot of rehab to go but for where he was he thought he looked good. The bullpen segment was really the only time he mentioned names, besides for the R.A. Dickey trade.  One extremely interesting tidbit about the Dickey trade was that the Mets were interested in two prospects from an unnamed team, but they were unwilling to part with them for the knuckleballer.  But once the Mets officially had Travis D’Arnaud in their possession that team called Alderson and said we will give you the two prospects for D’Arnaud straight up.  That tells you how highly regarded D’Arnaud is; and i am very interested to know who these players were (and if one was a ML ready OUTFIELDER!!).  Alderson obviously rejected the offer as he was very pleased with the package we received from Toronto.

Sandy also said that it is not impossible for Zack Wheeler to make the club out of Spring Training, although i think it is virtually impossible.  That is of course assuming we will have signed at least one veteran pitcher before the season starts.

The rotation at this point should be 1. Johan (out of respect) 2. Harvey (to make lefty righty lefty) 3. Neise 4. Gee 5. FA signee/Hefner
